About the Library

The library supports Birthingway’s educational programs and also serves birth-related healthcare providers and the larger community.

Student, Faculty, and Staff Borrowing Policy

Borrowing is free for students, faculty, and staff. Students must be in good financial standing to retain library privileges.

Books placed on reserve for the current term can be borrowed for a 24-hour period. Books or other items marked “Reference” or “In Library Use Only” cannot be checked out. Non-circulating videos and DVDs may be watched in the student den downstairs.

Books should be returned directly to a librarian or deposited in the box outside the library.

Overdue notices are sent by email. There are no fines for students and faculty on regular circulating items. Reserve and Hold overdue items have fines of $0.50 per day. When an item is 21 days overdue, it will be considered lost. The borrower will be charged the replacement cost of the item plus an additional processing fee of $10. Outstanding charges will prevent students from registering for classes and clinical training credits.

Library use is a privilege and can be suspended for any patron who regularly does not follow library policies, damages or loses items, or neglects to return items on time.

Community Library Cards

Everyone is welcome to use the library space and library materials. Anyone who is not a current Birthingway student, faculty or staff member is considered a community member.

Community members who would like to borrow materials may purchase a community library card. The cost is $15 for three months, $25 for six months, and $40 for a year. If a card is not expired, the difference can be paid in order to extend the card. Community members must present a valid ID (a driver’s license, state ID, or passport) in order to purchase a card.

Community members can borrow  up to five items at a time and most items are checked out for a 21-day period. Community members cannot borrow Reserve items. A fine of $0.50 per day will be charged on all overdue materials.  When an item is 21 days overdue, it will be considered lost and the same lost materials charge listed for students, faculty, and staff will apply.

Library use is a privilege and can be suspended for any community patron who regularly does not follow library policies, damages or loses items, or neglects to return items on time.

Student Computers and Printing

There are two computers for student use in the library, with one printer. There is another computer in the student den in the basement.

Google Cloud Print is available from birthingway.edu accounts. Google Cloud Print allows you to print Google documents from anywhere to the Upstairs and Den printers.

Copier and Scanner

There is no charge to students or instructors for making copies. Community members pay $0.10 per page. There is a scanner available for students.

Patrons are asked to use double-sided copying whenever possible.
